Hello shipmate, I know where you are at, you are in neutral land â a space where you are ok, you are comfortable, you have happy days, you have a routine, everything is in flow, but you feel like your lust for life has gone.
The pep in your step is no longer there. You may procrastinate a bit more with certain work tasks that you never use to, the appeal to go out to the crew functions is not as appealing anymore.
But you know that something is not quite right as you think about quitting ships, or what type of work you could do at home, or you think about how on your next vacation you are going to take action and look for something new.
There is nothing wrong with being here in âneutral landâ as you are comfortable, and you have job security. However, staying in neutral land and lacking clarity of why you are here is the danger.
I have seen many crew stay here in neutral land not knowing why they are specifically here and this results in lower performance at work, more stress, lower mental and physical energy, less confidence and esteem in one self and a little boredom in life.
For most crew they are in this neutral land for one of the below reasons or a combination of them.
You no longer have work fulfillment.
This can be due to you disliking your current position and or department. There is nowhere else to grow to within this role. Your work environment is more toxic. Salary and benefit changes. OrâŚ.
Ship lifestyle and environment
Spending between 4 to 9 months for crew onboard a ship in the same cabin, with the same four walls, the same routine, the same food, limited resources, limited free time, and rules & regulations can at times be a lot to handle, yet there does become a moment when âyah, I am on a shipâ no longer feels sooo good.
Personal matters at home
Those with partners, children, families and strong friendships at home â these people who are most important to us. We know time is the most valuable commodity in life. We cannot get it back; we cannot buy more of it, and we cannot replace it with anything. Therefore for some crew the desire to be nearer and have opportunities to spend with their loved ones can tip the scale and make you think about leaving.
For many crew they will happily just stay in neutral land, not wonder too much about it until something big pushes them one way or another.
Have you heard how folks are now using sick days when they are not feeling sick so they can rest when they feel they need to, thus, to help them from getting actually sick. I think it is a brilliant way to look at prioritizing yourself to get the best out of a situation and not let it run you.
You can apply this metaphor to being here in neutral land. Why wait until a big push comes which could completely push you overboard (yes pun intended). Taking a few moments to get awareness of which reason is correct for you being in neutral land will then mean you now have clarity. And WOWâŚ.clarity is the best thing in life, no more thinking, guessing, overwhelm, what ifâs etcâŚyou know!
It is from here where you can choose what you want to do next (if anything)âŚ.find a new position onboard that is more fulfilling, change departments, or cruise lines. Decide what you need to feel better when onboard in the ship environment or start thinking about what is needed to move off ships. And the best part of it all is you have full control over all of this process.
